Workshops

FTE Workshops offer teachers another opportunity to gain new materials and insight into economics topics.  The shorter, more condensed format of the workshop presentations allow more flexibility for teachers to easily gain new teaching tools and ideas in a shorter timeframe.  Workshops last approximately an hour and a half, and are held via Zoom.

The Great Escape, Part 2: Using Digital Escape Rooms in Today’s Economics Classroom

Learn more about how to offer escape room challenges to your students in grades 9-12! This follow-up session to the original Great Escape Workshop will provide some new virtual games for classrooms, including digital breakouts centered on production possibility curves and comparative advantage. In this activity, students are required to collaborate, think critically, and apply concepts learned in order to solve each lock. Teachers will be provided with the game URL and detailed instructions for running the digital breakout in their classrooms.

Socialism and Innovation

In this workshop, teachers will learn the difference between invention and innovation, hypothesize why so many more inventions were created in western market economies as opposed to socialist economies and then use clues to solve a mystery.

Will the Real Socialism Please Step Forward?

In this workshop, teachers will use knowledge of socialism to examine country profiles in the CIA World Factbook for evidence of socialism. After their examination they will decide how many steps forward to take for each country in answer to the question, “Will the real socialism please step forward?”.

Requirements

Active participation is required during all Workshops; participants are expected to keep cameras on during presentations.  Those who do not turn cameras on during sessions may be removed from the Workshop and will be ineligible for stipends.  Zoom breakout rooms are often used and attendees are expected to interact with each other to collaborate on virtual activities.  A second device (mobile, tablet, 2nd monitor) is usually helpful when accessing Workshop materials, but is not required.
