Robert Whaples

Robert Whaples is a Professor of Economics at Wake Forest University. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1990. His dissertation on the shortening of the workweek won the Allan Nevins Prize from the Economic History Association (EHA). His research focuses mainly on historical American labor markets and consensus among economists.

Professor Whaples was awarded the Hughes Prize for Excellence in Teaching Economic History from the EHA in 1999. He is the former Director of EH.Net, which provides economic history resources at www.eh.net, and former editor of EH.Net’s online Encyclopedia of Economic and Business History. Whaples began editing The Independent Review: A Journal of Political Economy in 2013 and is also a co-editor of The Routledge Handbook of Modern Economic History and The Routledge Handbook of Major Events in Economic History. He and his wife, Gina, have five adult children.
